People with good, close relationships live longer, healthier and happier lives. If your gut instinct has always said that the key people in your life have an enormous impact on it, this wisdom has now been ratified by the findings of Harvard’s Grant and Glueck study. One of the world’s longest studies, it has collected detailed data about the physical and mental health of 268 Harvard men (since the college then was still all-male) and 456 disadvantaged inner-city youths from Boston for nearly 80 years and tracked their health and aging. “When we gathered together everything we knew about them about at age 50, it wasn’t their middle-age cholesterol levels that predicted how they were going to grow old,” says Dr Robert J. Waldinger, the fourth director of the study. “It was how satisfied they were in their relationships.”

It is our experience and belief, too, that the quality of a person’s relationships is one of the most important factors that contributes to success in all spheres of life and helps people live long, happy, medicine-free lives. The relationships we forge today have a direct impact on mental and physical health through our lives, especially in the golden years.
